Legal Review The process of examining legal cases and documents to ensure compliance with the law.

In recent news, the Mexican Foreign Relations Ministry reported that thirteen Mexican citizens have died while in U.S. custody during the Trump administration. These deaths occurred in connection with immigration-related matters, prompting the Ministry to label the situation as “unacceptable.” The cases are under investigation, with causes including two deaths during ICE operations, four suicides, and one shooting incident. Six others were due to medical complications.

Deputy Foreign Relations Minister Roberto Velasco stated that the deceased ranged in age from 19 to 69 and were held across various U.S. states, from California to Florida. Two lawsuits have been filed by families, with other cases still undergoing legal review. Velasco emphasized the quest for justice for the families of the deceased.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has also condemned the deaths and has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding these incidents. She remarked on the need to examine the detention practices that led to these unfortunate outcomes.

To protect Mexican citizens, Foreign Relations Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente highlighted efforts to strengthen the network of 53 Mexican consulates in the U.S. This network aims to provide better services and protection for the 177,192 Mexican nationals detained since Trump’s second term began. Currently, 13,722 Mexicans remain in custody in the U.S.

Efforts to modernize and digitize consular services have increased capacity and reduced the need for in-person visits. Additionally, over 31 million pesos have been allocated to the “Mexico with M for Migrant” program, supporting the legal processes of Mexican nationals abroad.
