In 1975, the movie “Jaws” by Steven Spielberg introduced the world to the idea of a terrifying shark attack. It became a summer blockbuster, inspiring many other famous films. The movie made people afraid of sharks, even though real-life attacks are rare. There are two types of shark attacks: unprovoked, where sharks bite people in their natural habitat without being bothered, and provoked, where humans interact with sharks, like trying to touch them.

In 2024, there were 47 shark attacks worldwide, with only four resulting in death. Compared to other dangers like snake bites or lightning, shark attacks are extremely uncommon. Interestingly, in Mexico, no attacks were recorded in 2024.

Sharks face more danger from humans than we do from them. Around 73 million sharks are caught each year, often for their valuable fins. Mexico is a significant player in this trade, catching 20,000 to 40,000 tons of sharks annually. Despite regulations, illegal fishing continues, threatening shark populations.

Mexico is also known for shark tourism. Popular spots like Playa del Carmen and Cabo Pulmo attract tourists to see sharks in their natural habitat. While Playa del Carmen is famous for bull sharks, Cabo Pulmo is a protected marine park home to many species, including sharks.

Isla Guadalupe, once famous for cage diving with great white sharks, is currently closed to tourists to study sustainability practices. While this aims to protect sharks, there are concerns about illegal fishing in the area.
