Mexico’s Foreign Ministry has partnered with Japan to combat the growing buildup of sargassum, a harmful seaweed, on Mexican beaches.
Japan will provide ocean-monitoring tech, specialized collection ships, robotics and sensors. The initiative builds on Japan’s ongoing Caribbean coastal assistance.
Through Japan’s International Cooperation Agency and Mexico’s Agency for International Development Cooperation, the deal includes satellite tracking and technical training. Researchers will also explore turning harvested seaweed into fertilizers, biofuels and building supplies to protect marine habitats and support fishing and tourism.
The bilateral agreement between Mexico and Japan
Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi finalized the agreement, launching a joint working group to expand bilateral ties. They also initiated a high-level economic dialogue to boost trade, which reached US $9.9 billion through May — up 4% year over year.
Separately, President Claudia Sheinbaum pledged 2 billion pesos (about US $115 million) in federal funding to manage seaweed in Quintana Roo, including tourism hotspots like Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Cancún will host an international summit on sustainable coastal management in October.
