The latest PISA test results show that Mexican students are having a tough time in school. Four out of 10 15-year-olds in Mexico scored below the basic level in reading, math and science. This is more than twice the average of other countries in the OECD. In math, Mexican students scored 388 points, in reading 408 and in science 414. These scores are lower than the averages of other countries, which are 463, 461, and 482 points, respectively.
Since 2022, Mexico’s scores have gone down in math and reading, while science scores stayed the same. Overall, these are Mexico’s lowest results since 2009. However, 80% of Mexican students said they are curious about many topics, more than the global average. Also, fewer students in Mexico think school is a waste of time compared to other countries.
Many countries face similar challenges, such as short attention spans due to new technologies and a lack of teachers. Countries like China, Singapore, and Canada scored the highest in the PISA test. Mexico hopes to improve its education system to help students do better in the future.
