KeywordDescription
HurricaneA powerful storm system characterized by strong winds and rain.
EvacuationThe process of moving people away from an area of danger to a safer location.
FloodingAn overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry.

Hurricane Simon, a Category 2 storm, is currently moving along Mexico’s Pacific coast, bringing severe weather to the region. The storm has affected western states, particularly around Puerto Vallarta, with strong winds and heavy rainfall, raising the potential for flooding and evacuations. As of Monday morning, Simon was located about 49.7 miles from Cabo Corrientes and 74.6 miles from Punta Mita, Nayarit.

Simon’s maximum sustained winds decreased to 110 mph (175 km/h) but still produced gusts up to 135 mph. The storm is traveling northwest at approximately 1.9 mph and is expected to continue this path until Tuesday. After that, it may shift northeast and approach the coast by Wednesday. The U.S. National Hurricane Center has reported that hurricane-force winds extend up to 15 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds reach 60 miles outward.

Despite some weakening, Simon might regain strength and remain a hurricane until it reaches land. Heavy rains are anticipated, with Jalisco and Nayarit expecting 6 to 8 inches of rain, and similar conditions predicted for Sinaloa later in the week. Coastal areas are also facing dangerous surf conditions with waves reaching up to 16 feet.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has advised residents to stay updated and heed Civil Protection’s guidance due to risks of flooding and mudslides. The National Meteorological Service has issued a Hurricane Warning for areas from Playa Pérula, Jalisco, to El Roblito, Nayarit, and a Hurricane Watch from El Roblito to Bahía Tempehuaya, Sinaloa.
