A zoo in Mexico has some very exciting news! A cute, baby male tapir was just born at the Miguél Álvarez del Toro Zoo.

The zoo is in Chiapas, a state in Mexico. People also call this zoo ZooMAT.

The new baby is a Baird’s tapir. This type of animal is endangered, which means there are not many of them left in the wild. The scientists at ZooMAT teamed up with another zoo in Mexico City, called the Chapultepec Zoo, to help make this special birth happen.

Meeting the baby

When the little guy was born, he weighed about 18.5 pounds (8.4 kilograms). Right now, he is staying very close to his mom, Coco. She is doing a great job taking care of him.

The baby has already started drinking a special type of mother’s milk called colostrum. This milk is packed with everything he needs to stay healthy and strong. Because the first few weeks of a baby animal’s life are super important, zoo workers are watching him very closely to make sure he is okay.

Why this birth is super special

This is only the second time a baby tapir has been born in ZooMAT’s special breeding program. That is why everyone is so happy!

Here are a few cool facts about tapirs:

There are four kinds of tapirs, three of which live in the Americas. The Baird’s tapir, also called the “gardener of the forest,” helps forests grow by eating plants and spreading seeds in its waste. Sadly, they are threatened by habitat loss, poaching and slow reproduction. Because of these dangers, having tapirs born in zoos is rare and special.
