A rare win for wildlife conservation is unfolding at the Miguél Álvarez del Toro Zoo, where officials are celebrating the birth of a male Baird’s tapir.
Because the mammal is classified as an endangered species, every new arrival is a major victory. The calf’s birth is the latest success story from the Central American Tapir Conservation and Reproduction Program, a joint effort with Mexico City’s Chapultepec Zoo.
The newborn weighed a healthy 18.5 pounds (8.4 kilograms) at birth and is staying close to his mother, Coco. Zoo staff report she is nurturing him naturally. The calf has already received colostrum, the nutrient-rich first milk crucial for building a newborn mammal’s immune system.
A critical first month
While zoo officials emphasize that the first few weeks are critical for the calf’s survival, they say his early progress is promising. To keep the newborn safe without disturbing the new family, the zoo, widely known as ZooMAT, is using remote monitoring cameras alongside 24-hour security.
This is the second successful birth under ZooMAT’s controlled breeding program. Tapirs are large, plant-eating mammals easily recognized by their flexible, trunk-like snouts. Three of the world’s four tapir species live in the Americas. Often called the “gardeners of the forest,” Baird’s tapirs play a vital role in their ecosystems by eating fruit and dispersing seeds across wide areas through their droppings.
Protecting them is an uphill battle. The species is threatened by deforestation, fragmented habitats, poaching, car strikes and naturally low reproductive rates.
