| Migration | The seasonal movement of animals from one region to another. |
| Conservation | Efforts to preserve and protect wildlife and natural resources. |
The annual migration of monarch butterflies from southern Canada to central Mexico is now underway, with the first group spotted in Coahuila, a state on the northern border of Mexico. This event marks the start of the butterflies’ journey to their winter habitat in Michoacán’s pine forests. Linabeth Flores from Profauna, a Mexican non-governmental organization, confirmed that the migration has officially begun.
Monarch butterflies embark on this remarkable journey every year, traveling from Canada, through the United States, to Mexico. They begin their southward migration in late August, aiming to reach Mexico before their winter breeding season. New generations return north to Canada in spring and summer. Recently, monarch sightings have been reported in several cities in Coahuila, including Acuña, Múzquiz, Monclova, and Cuatro Ciénegas.
Researchers have tagged some monarchs with radio transmitters to track their movements. One butterfly, identified as MB26011, has traveled approximately 2,300 kilometers in 40 days, crossing into Mexico from Canada. Conservation groups in Canada, the United States and Mexico use this data to help protect the monarch population, which is threatened by climate change and habitat loss.
The peak of the butterfly migration is expected soon, with most reaching their destinations in Michoacán and the state of México by early November. Profauna encourages the public to share photos and reports of the butterflies, identifying their flight paths and resting spots.
Despite a population decline of up to 90% since the 1990s, the number of monarchs in central Mexico this spring was 64% higher than the previous year. This information comes from Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and the World Wildlife Fund.
