Health investigators recently checked hotels in Mexico’s Riviera Maya for a parasite called Cyclospora. This parasite can cause an illness called cyclosporiasis, which leads to severe diarrhea. The investigation started when British visitors got sick after visiting the region.
The Federal Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risk, known as COFEPRIS, tested fruits, vegetables and water from 16 hotels. They used a special method to look for Cyclospora. The good news is that all the tests came back negative, meaning there was no Cyclospora found in those samples.
COFEPRIS worked with other health experts to make sure everything was safe and clean. They wanted to be sure that the hotels followed all health and safety rules.
The parasite first became known following an outbreak in the United States, which has affected many people. Even though there have been some reports of the illness worldwide, Mexico is not thought to be the source of the problem.
Health Minister Dr. David Kershenobich emphasized that Cyclospora infections happen in many places, not just in Mexico. He reassured everyone that they are looking into the problem to keep travelers safe.
