Mexican people feel safer, but there are still problems in some areas of Mexico – Level 2

Keyword Description
Tepic A city in the state of Nayarit, on the Pacific coast.
ENSU National Survey of Urban Public Security, a survey of how safe Mexican people feel.
Cartel A powerful criminal organization.

A new survey by the Mexican government shows that fewer people in Mexico feel unsafe in their cities. The survey, called the ENSU, found that about 61.5% of people think their city is unsafe, which is a small improvement from past surveys. However, the feeling of insecurity is still high.

The survey showed that women generally feel less safe than men. For instance, 67.2% of women feel unsafe, compared to 54.6% of men. The survey also highlighted some cities where feelings of insecurity have increased a lot. In Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, more people feel unsafe due to recent violence after the death of cartel leader, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera.

Increased violence in other cities like Tepic and Zapopan also made people feel more insecure. The survey revealed that some activities and places make people feel unsafe, such as using ATMs, public transport, and walking on the streets. The Mexican Navy and Army were seen as the most effective in combating crime.

Despite the concerns, foreign residents in Mexico feel safer, according to another survey. This difference might be because they live in different areas or have various experiences. Looking ahead, about a quarter of people hope the security will improve, while some think it might stay the same or get worse.
