During an important meeting in Mexico City, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to strengthen the bilateral relationship between their countries. They announced a new plan focused on economic and financial cooperation, trade and technological development. At a press conference held in Mexico City’s National Palace, the leaders revealed they had signed 17 agreements. These agreements covered a wide range of areas, including artificial intelligence, aerospace, energy, defense and supply chains.
This visit by President Lee is significant for Mexico as it seeks to broaden its global economic ties, especially amid trade negotiations with the United States, its primary partner. Sheinbaum emphasized that South Korea is one of Mexico’s top five trading partners, with bilateral trade reaching $27 billion in 2025. Sheinbaum also noted that South Korean investments in Mexico have exceeded $11.5 billion since 2006.
President Lee, the first South Korean leader to visit Mexico since 2010, stated that both nations would complete the review of their investment promotion and protection agreement to enhance economic bonds. He highlighted Mexico’s importance as a strategic partner, especially given its role as a key player in the global supply chain.
The agreements encompass numerous fields such as science, technology, agriculture, security, intellectual property and cultural exchanges. Notably, the two governments have proposed creating cultural centers in each country and integrating Mexican small businesses into the supply chains of South Korean firms operating in Mexico. Additionally, discussions have begun on a $100 million credit scheme to assist Mexican businesses in acquiring Korean goods and services.
As part of the cultural exchange, there are plans for K-pop superstar BTS to potentially return to Mexico, with Stray Kids performing in Mexico City soon.
