Mexican high school students achieved great success at the 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in China. They won five bronze medals, thanks to their hard work and dedication. One student, Andrea Sarahi Cascante Duarte from Morelos, received a special honor called the Maryam Mirzakhani Award. She had the highest score among all female participants from the Americas.

The talented students who won bronze medals are Takumi Higashida Martínez from Mexico City, Juan Luis Manríquez Sequera from Baja California Sur, Sebastián Sotomayor Trujillo from Nuevo León, Javier Caram Quirós from Mexico City, and Iker Torres Terrazas from Chihuahua. These achievements helped Mexico rank third in Latin America, behind Brazil and Peru.

The Mexican Mathematics Olympiad (OMM) played a big role in their success. The OMM, with nearly 300 volunteers, supports these students by providing training and encouragement. Guadalupe Russell Noriega, the leader of the OMM, said that both the private sector and the public help make this possible.

The IMO started in Romania in 1959 and is known for its challenging math problems given over two days. Winning a medal is a great accomplishment, as half of the competitors receive one.
