Mexican students turn water crisis into global innovation, compete for prestigious sustainability prize – Level 2 (EN)

Keyword Description
Hydrostations Machines that extract drinking water from air
Sustainability Using resources responsibly for future generations
Innovation Creating new ideas or methods

In Monterrey, Mexico, a severe water crisis in 2022 led to daily water shortages for millions. Many people didn’t have water for days, forcing them to rely on tanker trucks. However, students from Escuela Secundaria Técnica No. 117 saw this challenge as an opportunity to innovate. They developed hydrostations, machines that convert moisture in the air into clean drinking water using solar power and Peltier technology. This project has made them finalists for the Zayed Sustainability Prize in 2026, competing globally for a prize of up to $150,000.

The students’ teacher, Professor Rogelio Monreal Moreno, emphasized how this project transformed students from being just learners to being active problem-solvers. They not only created a technical solution but also developed “AD COGNIS,” an educational program that promotes environmental awareness and leadership. Their project includes “ECOmunidad,” a digital platform for tracking progress, and “ECOnocedor,” a program to build STEM skills and community service involvement.

Despite facing competition from around the world, such as Kenya’s solar-powered refrigeration and Rwanda’s smart water ATMs, the Mexican students stand out with their holistic approach. They focus on both technology and education, inspiring their community and beyond. Even if they don’t win, their project is already a success, teaching valuable skills and opening doors to future innovation. This initiative shows that young people can tackle real-world problems with creativity and determination, turning challenges into opportunities for learning and growth.
