A team of brave rescue workers is back home after helping neighbors in need.
Mexico recently sent a special rescue team to the country of Venezuela after a big earthquake struck on June 24. When the team returned, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed them home.
The rescue team is called the Yumare Group. It is a special group from Mexico’s Defense Ministry that jumps into action during emergencies. The team sent 264 people and 18 smart rescue dogs to help.
For 15 days, the team worked hard. They saved two people and found 92 people who had died. They also gave out medicine and food.
A history of helping countries in need
Mexico did not just send people and dogs following the Venezuela earthquake — they also sent 70 tons of supplies using airplanes and boats. They even helped fix Venezuela’s electricity so lights could turn back on.
President Sheinbaum said Mexico is always ready to help Venezuela again. At a special ceremony, she praised the team for showing kindness.
To say thank you, Venezuela’s leader, Delcy Rodríguez, sent a thank -you letter and a special award to President Sheinbaum. Venezuela also gave Mexico a special gift: three Belgian Malinois puppies! This type of dog is super smart and great at rescue work. Giving puppies is a sweet tradition to say “thank you” for rescue help.
Helping others is nothing new for Mexico. Since 1996, the country has sent 98 rescue missions to 30 different countries around the world.
