Mexico recently concluded a humanitarian mission in Venezuela following a devastating earthquake on June 24.
Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, sent a dedicated team to assist the South American country. The rescue operations, organized by the Yumare Group, were carried out by 264 members of the Defense Ministry and 18 canine units. Over 15 days, rescue workers saved two people, recovered 92 bodies and provided humanitarian aid.
The mission also delivered more than 70 tons of supplies through an air bridge involving eight flights and two Navy ships. A medical team conducted more than 2,000 consultations and distributed over 14 tons of medicine. Additionally, the Yumare Group repaired eight power plants to help restore local infrastructure.
Gifts and awards for a job well done
At a ceremony on July 10, Sheinbaum praised the returning team, emphasizing Mexico’s commitment to global cooperation and solidarity. She said Mexico is prepared to offer more assistance if needed.
Defense Minister Gen. Ricardo Trevilla Trejo honored the Yumare Group members with awards for bravery, noting that some personnel worked 24-hour shifts. Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela’s executive vice president, expressed her country’s gratitude by awarding Sheinbaum the “Hero of Venezuela First Class” decoration. Rodríguez also gifted Mexico three Belgian Malinois puppies, a gesture recognizing the breed’s excellence in rescue work.
The tradition of gifting rescue dogs began with Turkey, which donated a puppy to Mexico after a Mexican rescue dog died during earthquake operations. Mexico has a long history of international aid, completing 98 humanitarian missions in 30 countries since 1996.
