UNESCO gives Mexico 6 months to help save the last vaquitas – Level 1

Keywords Description
Vaquita A small porpoise native to the Gulf of California that is the world’s most endangered marine mammal.
World Heritage Site A place recognized by UNESCO for its special cultural or natural importance.
UNESCO An organization that works to protect cultural and natural heritage around the world.

The vaquita is the world’s most endangered sea mammal. Today, only a few of these tiny porpoises remain in the wild. They live in the Gulf of California, a special body of water near Mexico. The area is listed as a World Heritage Site, which means it is protected for its unique sea life.

Illegal fishing nets are the biggest danger to vaquitas. Fishermen use these nets to catch a fish called the totoaba. Unfortunately, vaquitas often get trapped in the nets by accident.

Scientists are also worried about new factories being built nearby. These plants process liquefied natural gas. The construction and pollution from the factories could hurt the vaquitas and their ocean home.

The plan to save the vaquita species from extinction

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, is stepping in to help. UNESCO asked Mexico to protect the area from dangerous projects. The group gave the Mexican government until Feb. 1 to show a plan to save the porpoises.

Mexico is working to fix the problem. On July 18, the country celebrated International Save the Vaquita Day by sharing its progress. Part of the plan includes training young people to track the animals using special tools. During a recent search, helpers found a few vaquitas living outside their usual swimming areas.

Mexico must send a full report to UNESCO next year to prove the Gulf of California will stay safe for sea life.
