Sheinbaum inaugurates train linking CDMX to Felipe Ángeles International Airport – Level 3

Keyword Description
Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) An airport located approximately 40 kilometers north of Mexico City.
Mexican Revolution A period of civil war that followed the overthrow of dictator Porfirio Díaz between 1910-1920.
Initiative An act or strategy intended to resolve a difficulty or improve a situation.

Traveling to Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) from Mexico City has become more convenient with the introduction of a new suburban train line. This train connects Buenavista station, located in the northern part of the city, with the airport, which is situated about 40 kilometers away. This marks a significant step in the broader strategy to revitalize Mexico’s passenger rail services, an initiative that began during President López Obrador’s term and is being continued under President Claudia Sheinbaum.

During the opening ceremony at the AIFA-Clara Krause terminal, President Sheinbaum proclaimed the project a success. She had previously requested that the train station be named after Clara Krause, the wife of revolutionary general Felipe Ángeles, for whom the airport is named. Krause, originally from the United States, was a teacher in Mexico City but had to escape to New York during the Mexican Revolution and never reunited with her husband. She passed away shortly after her husband’s execution, and her ashes have only recently been brought back to Mexico.

The new train route includes six stations: Cueyamil, La Loma, Teyahualco, Prados Sur, Cajiga, Xaltocan, and the AIFA-Clara Krause Terminal. It is designed to transport over 57,000 passengers daily, with the potential to carry more than 80,000 people. The journey from Buenavista to AIFA takes about 50 minutes, but this will decrease to 43 minutes once the service is fully operational. Currently, the route operates with four trains running every 30 minutes, aiming to increase frequency to every 12 minutes.

For the first month, the fare is set at 45 pesos (approximately $2.60 USD), which may increase later. This fare is notably cheaper than ride-hailing services and buses, making the train a cost-effective option for travelers. The new service is also expected to re-establish Buenavista station as a central hub for the National Railway System.
