Why an earthquake in Colombia doesn’t mean Mexico will have one
Mexico and Colombia both sit within the Pacific Ring of Fire, an immense zone encircling the Pacific Ocean that is distinguished by intense seismic and volcanic activity. The region produces roughly 90% of the world’s earthquakes and contains three-fourths of its active volcanoes. Nevertheless, occupying the same tectonically active belt does not mean that an earthquake in one country can precipitate another in a neighboring nation.
The earthquake in Colombia was primarily caused by the interaction between the Nazca and South American plates. In contrast, Mexico’s seismic activity is driven by the Cocos Plate pushing beneath the North American Plate and the Rivera Plate contributing in the west.
While seismic waves from a major earthquake can sometimes cause disturbances far away, this does not allow scientists to predict a large earthquake in Mexico. The movement of tectonic plates is a constant process, releasing stress along various faults at different times and depths.
