Air Europa will start a new direct flight between Madrid and Bajío International Airport in Guanajuato, the main airport of the state. Governor Libia Dennise García announced this during her work trip to Spain for the FITUR 2026 tourism fair, after signing an agreement with the airline and meeting with its CEO, Richard Clark. The exact dates and number of flights per week are not decided yet, but the plan is for the route to start operating this year and help present Guanajuato as an international‑level destination.
The Bajío airport is located in Silao, about 45 kilometers from Guanajuato city, and this new connection is expected to improve the state’s international reach. García explained that the flight will strengthen international connectivity, bring more European tourists and create economic benefits for sectors such as hotels, restaurants and services. Authorities hope that Guanajuato will become a strategic point in global tourism and business networks, attracting visitors and investors from different countries. The governor said this progress comes from constant promotion at FITUR, “knocking on doors” and showing that Guanajuato has identity, vibrant culture and “a lot of heart.”
During the same tour, Guanajuato signed a Framework Agreement of Understanding with the Spanish region of Castilla‑La Mancha to encourage tourism, cultural exchange and collaboration between both regions. The state government says it is working to strengthen its ties with the world and take advantage of the strong European interest in traveling to Guanajuato.
