BTS tickets trouble in Mexico City – Level 1

Keyword Description

Tickets A pass you buy so you can enter a concert, game, or event
Resale When someone buys a ticket and then sells it again, usually for more money

BTS, a very famous K‑pop group from South Korea, planned three big concerts in Mexico City, but buying tickets became a big problem for many kids and teenagers. In less than 40 minutes, all the tickets for the 65,000-seat stadium were sold, while more than 1.1 million people waited in an online line. Many fans said the website stopped working, showed errors, or would not let them choose tickets that looked available. Some people even saw lines at ticket windows, even though tickets were supposed to be just for fan club members, so many thought others were trying to buy and resell the tickets for more money.

Mexico’s consumer protection office, called Profeco, received thousands of messages from angry fans and started actions against Ticketmaster and ticket resale pages for not treating people fairly. Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, said that about 1 million young Mexicans wanted to go to the concerts, but there were only 150,000 tickets. She wrote a letter to the prime minister of South Korea asking BTS to visit Mexico more often or at least allow big screens so people without tickets could watch. BTS, a seven-member boy band formed in 2013, is the best-selling group in South Korean history and is about to start a huge world tour after finishing their military service.
