After excelling in many math contests in Mexico, two young students from Oaxaca, Ada and Zuri, were invited to compete in the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC), a well-known global math competition. However, attending this event was not easy — they needed to find a way to pay for the expensive trip to Singapore. They showed creativity and determination by raising funds through raffles, bake sales, and the help of their community. Thanks to their efforts and the support of organizations like the Oaxaca Lending Library Foundation, they gathered enough money for flights and hotels, turning their dream into reality.
For both Ada and Zuri, the trip was a life-changing experience. It was their first time traveling outside of Mexico, and they joined over 2,000 students from 37 countries. The competition involved solo and team events where they had to solve challenging puzzles. Ada received a silver medal in the Mastermind category, and Zuri earned a bronze medal as part of a group and an honorable mention individually. Both of them faced tough math problems and met other brilliant students, helping them grow academically and personally.
Their journey to Singapore not only proved their math skills but also showed the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and community support. Both young men recognized how mentors and family helped them achieve their goals. Ada’s pizza shop job led to key connections, while Zuri’s family organized bake sales. These experiences taught them that with dedication and a solid support network, even big challenges can be overcome. Zuri's coach, for example, played a big role in encouraging his passion for math.
Inspired by their achievements, Ada plans to study biomedical engineering and dreams of attending renowned universities, while Zuri hopes to major in computer science and support math education in Mexico. Both believe that pursuing one's goals requires hard work and staying focused. Their story is an example of how dedication, creativity, and support from others can open doors and create new opportunities, no matter where you are from.
