Mexico wants to help solve the US-Venezuela crisis – Level 2

Keyword Description
Conflict A serious disagreement or fight between countries, groups, or people that can sometimes lead to war
Resources Valuable materials found in nature that countries use or sell, like oil, gas, gold, or water
Mediator A person or country that helps two sides in a disagreement talk to each other and find a peaceful solution

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has offered to help the United States and Venezuela talk to each other instead of fighting. The problem started when US President Donald Trump sent many military ships to surround Venezuela and stopped their oil tankers from moving. Trump says Venezuela's leader, Nicolás Maduro, is using stolen oil money to support drug dealers and terrorists. He even called Venezuela's government a terrorist organization and threatened to attack the country. This has made everyone worried that a war could start in South America.

President Sheinbaum said Mexico doesn't agree with military action and wants both countries to solve their problems peacefully through conversation. She explained that Mexico has always believed countries should solve their own problems without other nations interfering, even if people don't like how those countries are run. Sheinbaum also criticized the United Nations for not doing more to stop this conflict from getting worse. She thinks the UN should be working harder to bring both sides together and prevent violence. Mexico is willing to be the place where these peace talks happen, but Sheinbaum said she's open to other countries helping too if it means avoiding war.

Venezuela is important because it has lots of oil, which both countries are arguing about. Maduro says the US just wants to take Venezuela's natural resources like oil, gas, and gold, basically trying to control his country. Meanwhile, Trump insists Venezuela owes America money and resources. Both leaders are making strong statements and don't seem ready to compromise, which is why Mexico's offer to help is so important right now.
