Monarch butterflies on a long journey – Level 1

Keyword Description
Trackers The device that helps scientists follow the butterflies
Butterfly sanctuary A safe place where butterflies can live and grow
Protect To keep something safe from harm or danger

Scientists are using tiny GPS trackers to follow monarch butterflies on their amazing trip from the United States to Mexico. This year, they tagged 500 butterflies in Kansas and watched them travel over 4,000 kilometers to the butterfly sanctuary in Michoacán. The trackers are very light and use smartphone signals. Scientists can now see where the butterflies rest and how far they fly, learning more about their journey every year.

Sadly, fewer butterflies are making it to Mexico because their homes are getting destroyed, and there’s less water along the way. By using these new trackers, experts hope to find ways to help and protect monarchs on their trip. If you want, you can even follow their adventure with the Project Monarch app.
