This New Year’s Eve, Mexico City will turn its famous street, Paseo de la Reforma, into a giant dance floor for what is being called the world’s biggest electronic music party. The Angel of Independence monument will act as a huge stage where national and international artists will perform, surrounded by music, bright lights, and thousands of people. The mayor, Clara Brugada, is inviting everyone in the city to celebrate the end of the year dancing together in a safe, free, and fun public space.
The event will start at 6 p.m. on December 31 and end at 2 a.m. on New Year’s Day, giving people eight hours to dance, sing, and enjoy the night. The city plans to place big screens, lights, and sound equipment all along the avenue so that the whole area feels like one huge festival. Mexico City also hopes to beat last year’s record, when the DJ group Polymarchs brought more than 200,000 people to Reforma for a New Year’s celebration.
This party is part of a bigger holiday program in the Historic Center of the city. There will be three lit Christmas trees, 14 light sculptures, a 150-meter light tunnel, a giant nativity scene, and 120 stands selling Mexican handicrafts. Between December 20 and January 4, more than 600 artistic activities will take place, including nativity plays, music shows, and a special Christmas show in the Zócalo with daily performances and storytelling.
