Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, is very upset about a recent military attack that the United States made in Venezuela, where Venezuela’s leader Nicolás Maduro was captured and taken to New York to face crimes. The Mexican government said this attack breaks important United Nations rules that say countries should not use force against other countries. Mexico reminded everyone that Latin America and the Caribbean should be an “area of peace,” and that using bombs or soldiers in the region can create big problems and more conflict.
Mexico says the best way to solve problems between countries is to talk, listen and make agreements instead of fighting. At the same time, U.S. President Donald Trump defended the attack and even said that drug cartels, not Sheinbaum, are “running Mexico,” and that “something’s going to have to be done with Mexico.” Sheinbaum answers that Mexico is ready to work with the U.S. on security, but will never accept foreign soldiers or attacks inside Mexico, because that would break Mexico’s right to control its own territory.
