On October 18th, something special happened at the Tijuana Cultural Center: over 60 women from the United States and Mexico sang together, even though their cities are separated by the busy border between San Diego and Tijuana. Getting ready for this concert took months of planning and lots of teamwork. It wasn’t easy—for many people, crossing the border can be stressful and complicated, but these choirs showed it’s possible to build friendships through music. Women from San Diego woke up early to travel to Tijuana, sometimes walking long distances and waiting in lines. When they arrived, they were greeted warmly by the hosts from Mexico, sharing coffee, pastries, and a traditional song. For one day, everyone felt united, no matter where they came from.
The idea came from Daria Abreu, the director of Meraki Women’s Choir in Tijuana, who dreamed of joining voices with the San Diego Women’s Chorus. With help from the Mexican Consulate and organizations that support the arts, the choirs found a way to sing together on World Singing Day—a global celebration of music and unity. On stage, the women weren’t just singing; they were moving and learning new songs as one group. Even though the border usually divides people, this event showed that it can also connect them in creative, positive ways.
The concert was a success, and many singers felt thankful for the opportunity. By being patient and supporting each other, these women became musical ambassadors—showing that working together can make the border a place of friendship and understanding. For a few hours, everyone in the choir forgot about differences and shared in the joy of music. Experiences like this teach us that we can come together, even if we are from different countries.
