Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, will spend Christmas in Acapulco from December 25 to 27, taking her first official vacation since becoming president. Acapulco is still trying to recover from Hurricane Otis, which hit the city in 2023, killing many people and causing a lot of damage to hotels, streets, and businesses. By going there for Christmas, the president shows that Acapulco is still important and that the people who live there have not been forgotten.
In her morning press conference on December 22, Sheinbaum said that her daily talks with the press would stop from December 24 to 29 so journalists can also rest during the holidays. She shared that for Christmas dinner she will eat romeritos, a traditional Mexican dish made with a local herb, mole, and potatoes, which she says is her favorite food for this celebration. Even though she will be on vacation and away from the National Palace, she said she will stay alert to what happens in the state of Guerrero, especially the “Paseo del Pendón” festival in Chilpancingo, where many people gather. Federal and state authorities will work together to provide security if it is needed.
Sheinbaum also explained that there are no longer special vacation houses only for the president in places like Cozumel or Acapulco. The houses that still exist now belong to the Defense Ministry or the Navy, not for her private use. At the end of her December 23 press conference, she asked everyone to sing “Feliz Navidad” and thanked reporters and viewers for being with her each morning. She wished a Merry Christmas to everyone and hoped that Santa Claus would bring many gifts to all the boys and girls in Mexico.
