Empathy Understanding and caring about others’ feelings

There’s a very special dog walking around Monterrey’s streets, but it’s not a normal dog. Waldog is a robot dog! Unlike real dogs, Waldog doesn’t bite, bark loudly, or make messes. Instead, it has a clear message: to help people understand how important it is to take care of animals.

Waldog looks like a beagle and has artificial intelligence, which means it can move and respond to people on its own. Created by Senator Waldo Fernández González, who loves animal rights, Waldog’s main mission is to give a voice to stray animals and promote adopting pets from shelters instead of buying them. The senator bought Waldog for around $4,000 and controls it remotely.

This robot dog does more than just walk around the neighborhoods. It can spot trash and potholes, check on stray dogs, help register them, and even talk to people to raise awareness about treating animals with respect. Waldog can stand on its hind legs and even has its own social media pages, like Instagram and Facebook, where it shares its adventures.

Since July, Waldog has been visiting schools, parks, and neighborhoods all over Monterrey to encourage people to care for animals responsibly. When Waldog was officially debuted, a local veterinarian “adopted” it as a symbol of responsible pet care.

Robotic dogs like Waldog are gaining attention worldwide, used not only for activism but also in search and rescue missions or border patrol. Waldog’s creator hopes these visits will teach the community kindness toward animals and inspire responsible pet ownership.

Waldog continues to explore Monterrey, making new friends while reminding everyone of the importance of empathy and care for animals.

Time to discuss

  • How can technology like Waldog help solve real-world problems?
  • What are some ways you could use empathy in your own life to help animals or people?
  • Why is activism important, and how can teenagers get involved in important causes?
