Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum attended the FIFA World Cup final in East Rutherford, New Jersey, accepting a personal invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Sheinbaum sat alongside Trump to watch Spain defeat Argentina 1-0 in extra time. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was also in attendance for the championship game.
President Sheinbaum said she went to the game because President Trump personally invited her. This was the first game she went to in person during the tournament, even though Mexico hosted several matches. Earlier in the tournament, she gave her opening-match tickets away to a young Indigenous woman so she could attend the game between Mexico and South Africa. Sheinbaum watched Mexico’s victory against Czechia from her home.
Why the meeting between presidents was important
This marked only the second in-person meeting between the leaders of Mexico and the United States. They previously met last year in Washington, D.C., during the World Cup draw ceremony. A second planned meeting at an international summit did not happen after President Trump left early due to foreign conflicts.
The leaders met despite recent disagreements between the two nations. Tension had grown over issues regarding illegal operations by CIA agents in Mexico and legal actions taken by Mexico following the deaths of Mexican citizens in U.S. custody.
President Sheinbaum returned to Mexico after the match and was back at work on Monday.
