Pouleth Carbajal is a 24-year-old swimmer from Colima, Mexico. She just made history. Carbajal became the first person from her state to swim across the English Channel all by herself.
She started her big swim at Shakespeare Beach in England. She swam across the cold water and finished in Wissant, France. The hard trip took her a little more than 14 hours.
The English Channel is a body of water between England and France known for being a famous endurance test. It is very hard to swim across because the water is freezing cold. The waves and strong currents make it tough, too. The fastest person ever to swim it did it in just under seven hours.
Carbajal did not swim alone. Her mother, Gabriela Cuero, and her coach, Sandra Venegas Ortiz, stayed close on a boat to help her. Another Mexican swimmer named Karina Almanza watched to make sure she was safe. Almanza swam the channel back in 2018.
Leaders in her hometown praised her for working hard. They said she proved that anyone can reach big goals with practice.
The Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation called her trip a success. Once officials check her time, Carbajal will be the 88th person from Mexico to finish this famous solo swim.
