Air Europa has announced a new direct flight between Madrid and the Bajío International Airport in Guanajuato, Mexico. This route was confirmed by Guanajuato’s governor, Libia Dennise García, during a work trip to Madrid for the International Tourism Fair FITUR 2026. The exact start date and weekly frequency of the flight have not been defined yet, but the goal is for it to begin operating within this year. Authorities see this connection as a big step toward promoting Guanajuato as a world‑class tourist destination.
The Bajío International Airport is located in Silao, about 45 kilometers from the city of Guanajuato, and is the state’s main international airport. A direct route to Madrid will make it easier for European travelers to visit central Mexico without needing multiple stops. According to Governor García, this flight will improve the state’s international connectivity and attract more visitors from Europe. She also highlighted that the agreement with Air Europa came from active promotion efforts at FITUR, where the state government has been “knocking on doors” and building alliances.
The new flight is expected to bring economic benefits to several sectors in Guanajuato, including hotels, restaurants and different service industries. With more tourists arriving, local businesses could see more jobs and higher income. The state hopes to position itself as a strategic hub within global tourism and business networks. In addition to the airline deal, Guanajuato signed a Framework Agreement of Understanding with the Spanish region of Castilla‑La Mancha to encourage tourism, cultural exchange and collaboration.
Governor García said that Guanajuato is working to strengthen its ties with the world and take advantage of the strong European interest in visiting the state. She described Guanajuato as a destination with its own identity, vibrant culture and “a lot of heart.” The government expects that this direct connection with Madrid will not only bring more visitors but also create long‑term partnerships in tourism and culture. For young travelers, this route could make it easier to explore both Spain and Mexico, and to experience how regions with shared history build new connections today.
