Crumbling to break into small pieces

You can now climb part of the Pyramid of the Moon in the ancient ruined city of Teotihuacán, near Mexico City! This amazing pyramid was closed for five years. First, it closed because of COVID-19 and then so workers could clean and fix it. On May 19, 2025, the first section reopened so visitors could climb up 47 steps over five flat levels. The higher parts are still closed to keep the pyramid safe for the future.

The people who care for the pyramid made sure it is safe by fixing old, crumbling stairs and adding new handrails. They want to keep everyone safe while letting them have a fun visit. Even celebrities like singer Alicia Keys couldn’t climb the pyramid when it was closed in 2023!

Teotihuacán is a super old city — built a long time ago, between the years 200 and 450 A.D. (That’s almost 2000 years ago!) Its name means “the place where the gods were created.” The Pyramid of the Moon is the second biggest at Teotihuacán and was used for special ceremonies hundreds of years ago.
