Pouleth Carbajal, 24, of Colima, Mexico, recently swam across the English Channel. The waterway separates England and France and is famous for its dangerous, unpredictable conditions.
Carbajal began her journey at Shakespeare Beach in England early in the morning. She reached Wissant, France, after swimming for 14 hours, 7 minutes. The direct route across the channel is about 21 miles, but powerful ocean currents forced her to swim much farther. Her grueling trip made her the first person from Colima to complete the solo swim.
A dedicated support team accompanied Carbajal, including her mother and her coach, Sandra Venegas Ortiz. An observer, Karina Almanza, also tracked the swim to make sure Carbajal followed all official rules.
Her accomplishment still needs final verification. However, the Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation has already recognized the trip as a success and congratulated her. Officials and locals in her hometown of Manzanillo called the swim a point of pride that shows what discipline and determination can achieve.
The English Channel is one of the toughest challenges for open-water swimmers because of its freezing water, strong tides and heavy ship traffic. Once officials confirm Carbajal’s swim, she will become the 88th Mexican athlete to cross the channel alone. Her success adds another exciting chapter to Mexico’s rich history of open-water swimming accomplishments.
